Cosmetic acupuncture

Beauty comes from within

The skin and the connective tissue are closely connected to a person’s overall health. For this reason, symptoms on the skin will be symptoms acupuncturists will consider in a wider perspective – looking at the person’s general health. In fact, one of the first things acupuncturists look at is the person’s skin and complexion.

Therefore, acupuncture is effective not only for the treatment of general diseases but also for improving general appearance.  The internal health is reflected on the outside.

We are using acupuncture to treat cosmetic problems such as smoothing out wrinkles, skin lifts, improving muscle tone after childbirth or after losing weight, for cellulites etc. But the thing is – for all sort of surface/symptomatic treatments – you must look for the reason, the source of the problem and treat that to get lasting results.

The inter- relationship between the skin and the connective tissue, the difference between fatty skin and moist skin, how there can be a mixture of dry skin and oily skin in different parts of the body and how a skinny person can have cellulites are all conditions that have an underlying reason and demands a deeper understanding from the therapist if you want to get rid of these problems, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Good results can just as well be obtained by not treating the local area affected by a skin disease or imperfection, but by treating the energy imbalance that causes the problem.

If I was to treat acne for example, I would most likely not use local points for that because the treatment of acne involves application of needles to points on other parts of the body to reduce oiliness and inflammation of facial skin.

This should also be combined with avoidance of foods that cause oily skin and increase the kind of foods that would regulate the bowel movements. To give the bowel a bit of help will also help the skin eliminate its sebaceous secretions which will result in successful long term effects.

As an acupuncturist and a naturopath, I will look at the whole picture. So of course, I will use local points if that is needed. I will give advice on skin type classifications as well as topical and internal supplements. But the lasting solution to the sagging skin might not be a cream only, but a healthier whole body.

It is important to bring about a state of balance to the body and have the “know-how” to treat the cosmetic and dermatological problems both locally and in general to cure these problems.
